Boat Trailer Buying Guide
Most boat owners are not fortunate enough to live right on the water with their very own dock. This means that you have to invest in a boat trailer to safely and securely transport your boat to and from your house or storage facility and the body of water you plan to cruise in. Finding the right boat trailer can take some time, but these tips can help.
Bunk or Roller?
The primary types of boat trailer are bunk trailers and roller trailers. Bunk trailers are suitable for floating your boat on and off to load it, which requires you to have a boat launch that lets you reverse the trailer into the water. Roller trailers have rollers on the rails of the trailer so that you can slide the boat on or off instead, which is easier when you can’t launch directly into the water.
Steel or Aluminum?
The next thing you need to consider is the type of material you want your boat trailer to be made from. The standard options are steel and aluminum, with each metal having its own benefits and drawbacks.
Steel boat trailers are sturdy and strong, which makes them unlikely to flex or bend under your boat’s weight. If they’re galvanized, steel trailers are also rust-resistant. Bear in mind that steel can corrode in saltwater, however. Steel is also going to be more expensive.
Aluminum boat trailers are light in weight and more flexible, which is ideal for lightweight boats. Aluminum is also less expensive, but it can’t support heavy weights as well.
