Your boat provides you with the perfect way to get out into the sun and enjoy a warm summer day with friends and family. In order to have a comfortable, fun, and successful boat outing, though, you need to do a little preparation to make sure that you have everything you need on your boat, and that your boat is all ready to go. Here are some things you’ll want to do in order to prepare for your summer boat trips.

Gather Necessary Documents

Some careless boat owners may forget to grab their important paperwork and keep it on their boat, causing them upset when they need to retrieve it in an emergency. Don’t be like them — instead, gather up your boat insurance papers, your license, your registration, and your ID and keep them in a waterproof folio in a secure place on your boat. It’s a smart idea to make photocopies of all of these documents to keep at home, should something get lost or wet.

Be Prepared to Address Medical Issues

It’s not likely that a serious medical crisis will befall you and your passengers on an afternoon boat outing, but minor health issues and injuries are common enough that you’ll want to be ready to deal with them when they happen.

Sun protection is crucial for everyone; polarized UV sunglasses and high-SPF waterproof sunscreen should be worn by all your passengers. An SPF lip balm is also a good idea. Wearing lightweight clothing in a breathable fabric like cotton or linen is smart to keep your skin protected, along with a wide-brimmed hat to shield your face from the sun.

Make sure you’ve got a well-stocked first-aid kit on board your boat with bandages, ointments, aloe vera, tweezers, nail clippers, painkillers, anti-nausea medication, and any medications you or your family might need.

Pack enough water so that everyone can stay hydrated and keep some snacks on board if you’re not packing a whole meal so that no one goes hungry.

Bring Clothes, Towels, & Blankets

Additional clothing, especially rain gear, is a great thing to pack on your boat since you never know when a storm might send cold winds your way. The temperature on the water is often several degrees colder than on land, so light jackets, sweaters, or blankets will be appreciated by your passengers. Don’t forget to pack lots of towels in case people go swimming!
