Wakeboarding is much more than a hobby. Once you've tried it, it becomes a way of life. Before you get started, you might want to think about the other goodies (besides the wakeboard) you'll need. To simplify things, we've created a list of the top three things you'll want to invest in before hitting the water. After reading, head out to JC Sports in Seneca, South Carolina, where our friendly and knowledgeable staff can answer all your wakeboarding questions. We proudly serve all future and current wakeboard owners in Greenville and Anderson.

Flotation Device and Life Jacket

Flotation and buoyancy accessories are a must-have for anyone involved in wakeboarding, even for strong swimmers. Wakeboarding is a demanding activity, and keeping your head above water can be challenging, especially after a fall. Life jackets are the most convenient form of buoyancy and are life-savers when knocked down by a wave. Once you fall off your board, flotation devices also reduce the amount of energy expended while you're waiting for the boat to come back around. Because traditional life jackets run big, consider investing in a lifejacket specifically made for watersports or wakeboarding.

Headwear

Not all wakeboarders wear helmets, which doesn't mean you shouldn't. While there's no law prohibiting no helmet, you'll be glad you invested in one after your first couple of wipeouts. Wakeboarding is intense, with speeds reaching upwards of 60 mph, and the water can feel like concrete when you fall. You certainly don't want to risk head trauma when you're out to have a good time. Fallen tree limbs and other debris can also cause injury. Look for wakeboard-specific helmets, as they tend to be less bulky and don't get waterlogged.

Swim Apparel

Lastly, you'll want to pick out the most appropriate swimwear for this activity. As mentioned, wakeboarding can be intense, as well as thrilling. You want to be as comfortable as possible but also reduce injury. While it's OK to wear regular swim trunks, you'll probably regret it later if you wipe out. Falling on the water at 60 plus mph is similar to a motorcycle fall and causes "road rash." While road rash won't kill you, it can leave a painful reminder of why you didn't invest in proper swim attire. Consider investing in a wetsuit, which has the added benefit of keeping you warm on cold days. By owning a wetsuit, you'll be able to enjoy the ocean or lake in the fall and winter while everyone else is at home!
